Elon Musk's deleted tweet hints at more Teslas with 'falcon-wing' doors

Boss suggests one of Tesla's two upcoming models will get jazzy doors

Published: 07 Oct 2015

The Tesla Model X has cool doors. Among all of the wildly impressive titbits that emerged from the electric crossover's big reveal (762bhp and 0-60 in 3.2 seconds, to name just a couple), its falcon-wing rear doors have created the biggest buzz.

The good news is they’ll be available elsewhere, too, if a recent blurt from Tesla overlord Elon Musk is anything to go by.

See, it seems two cars lurk on the Tesla horizon: the Model 3, a smaller-than-Model S saloon aimed at the BMW 3-Series and Audi A4, and the Model Y, believed to be a dinkier SUV spun from the Model 3.

A recent missive from Musk seemed to reveal that one of these two offerings will borrow the Model X's falcon-wing doors, yielding easy access in tight spots and titillating passers-by in equal measure.

When one Twitter user copied Musk into a tweet saying how much they hoped a “Model III crossover” would get falcon-wing doors, the man himself responded: “there will be a Model 3 and a Model Y. One of the two will.”

It was hastily deleted, Musk perhaps realising he’d said too much. That, or it was a tactical drip-feeding of information to keep the internet comments boxes busy. If we were betting sorts, we'd guess the falcon doors are more likely to grace the crossover than the saloon, but with Tesla you never truly know.

Either way, the cool doors look here to stay. Happy?
