Six really rare and possibly brilliant* used saloon cars we found for under £5k

*'Possibly' doing a lot of heavy lifting here

Fed up of new cars slinging every function into a touchscreen? Fight back by buying a really old, really rare, really big Vauxhall saloon! Not only is it positively flush with buttons, this one we found is also flush with a big, meaty V6. It never measured up to a 5 Series of the day, but these things are actually underrated gems.

  2. Peugeot 405

Younger readers may not remember the impact that famous advert had on an entire generation of petrolheads, but the 405 and Berlin’s Take My Breath Away shall forever be entwined. Gorgeous looks, great to drive, practical and now terrifyingly rare. Here’s an absolute minter.

  3. Ford Mondeo

Used to be an easy, obvious choice but how times have changed. Rare in its day, even rarer now, the ST220 was a diamond of a car. Pickings today are what you’d affectionately call ‘slender’. Here’s a belter, though: a Mk2 ST220 with a lovely V6.

  4. Alfa Romeo 166

It’s an old, V6-engined four-door Alfa Romeo with a polished intake manifold, a part-wooden steering wheel and some buttons. Well, you only live once.

You know the rules: you can't call yourself a petrolhead unless...

  5. Jaguar XJ

There’s a better supply of these things compared to what you’ve already seen, but they’re still vanishingly rare on UK roads. Can’t begin to imagine why: this is a classic, four-door bruiser that looks like it’s already up to no good. Especially when it’s packed full of V6, like this one.

  6. Honda Accord

    Honda Accord

It’s a Honda, so it’ll outlast time itself. It’s an Accord, so nobody will give it a second glance. And it’s a Type S, meaning you’ll drive around with the warm glow of owning one of the rarest cars in the country.

    Why the hell not, eh
