Wild new Jensen Interceptor GTX to spawn trio of super-GT V8s

Digested the news that Jensen International is bringing back the Interceptor name on a crazy, track-only ‘GTX’ concept with 960bhp?

Then you’ll be wondering what’s next. And here’s your answer. Honestly, you wait sixty years for someone to resurrect the Jensen Interceptor, and three come along at once.

Okay, not exactly. These renderings give an idea of what Jensen is aiming for. Resplendent with ginormo-wing and all the interior comfort of a nuclear submarine, the GTX is the first variant to exist.

Should everything proceed as planned, Jensen will follow it up with two road-going versions. There’s the standard Interceptor, and the winged Interceptor GTR – a sort of road legal version of the track-only GTX.

It’s expected that all three will share versions of the Late Model Engines-honed GM V8 which could theoretically develop up to 1,200bhp.

Also, pay close attention to the cutlines in the side of the road-going Interceptor. You’ll spot something the original never sported: rear doors. The idea is that to improve access to the rear cabin, the new Interceptor will feature rear-hinged coach doors, like the much-missed Mazda RX-8. Or the BMW i3, come to think of it.

Jensen boss David Duerden explains the game plan: “Beyond the GTX programme, our ambition is to develop a low-volume series of road-going GTR cars with the same analogue feel and ultra-high-performance credentials, followed by a fully luxury-oriented GT model, a model most closely inspired by the original Interceptor.

"We’re taking that process one step at a time and, crucially, making sure that each stage is properly funded, designed, engineered and developed. We’re very clear about what we want those next stages to become, while being fully flexible to work with our customers and respond to their specific needs.”

No word yet on expected production dates or all-important prices. Jensen International is full steam ahead on the track-spec GTX prototype for now. The much more difficult job of building a fully-realised, beautifully finished street version comes later.
