Gran Turismo 7 will get a major graphics overhaul for PS5 Pro

Somehow Polyphony will make its luxurious racer even prettier on Sony’s new hardware

Published: 04 Oct 2024

Sony’s £700 pricing for the PS5 Pro has furrowed many an eyebrow since the new hardware was announced, so now it’s up to the supported games to show us why spending the equivalent of a package holiday on a games console is a good idea.

With that in mind, ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to the stage: Gran Turismo 7.

Even before graphics had been invented, the first Gran Turismo found a way to look like a supermodel on the PS1. The series has long been known as a benchmark for driving game gorgeousness (measured in the number of ‘pfff’ sounds made while giving an approving nod and raised eyebrows ), so it makes a lot of sense for PlayStation to leverage GT7 as a poster child for the PS5 Pro’s increased graphical heft.

Where will you see the differences? The introduction of ray tracing into scenes will be the most noticeable upgrade. This advanced lighting simulation should give everything from trackside puddles to car bonnets a more convincing set of real-time reflections.

GT7’s not stopping there though. Although it can already run in 4K, Sony’s not-at-all-hyperbolic ‘Spectral SuperResolution’ upscaling tech can in theory make those 4K textures look even sharper.

And if that’s not enough to prompt a slight bpm spike, how about the prospect of 8K? Added as an experimental feature, the 8K mode will target 60fps. That’s enough detail to see the individual dust particles your 1996 Mazda Demio’s previous owner failed to vacuum out of the footwell. Also spotting brake markers and other less important stuff like that.

The early details of GT7’s graphics overhaul come from Polyphony Digital main programmer Shuichi Takano, via a new post on the PlayStation Blog. You can also read about how other first-party developers are looking to harness all that new hardware grunt.

PS5 Pro launches on 7 November, with supported games following in its wake.
