Video: listen to the new Honda Civic Type R rev
Wrap your ears around the fruity new sound of Honda’s 316bhp turbo four-pot
Hideki Kakinuma, Assistant Project Lead for the new Honda Civic Type R, is very aware that the current Type R sounds a bit… meh. In its current state, the 2.0-litre four-cylinder direct injection VTEC Turbo makes noise. But not a particularly sonorous or inviting noise. It goads you on, but it’s not tuneful and gets boomy at speed.
But being erm… studious listeners, Kakinuma-san and his team have been working hard on the new Type R to make sure it sounds better. This is in part due to reworking the sound deadening but also thanks to those F40-style triple exhaust pipes.
Apparently, these twisting and different diameter pipes create a negative pressure at mid and high RPM that reduces the booming noise while increasing the overall volume and attractiveness of the ‘brum brums’ that come out the back. We’re yet to hear it for ourselves, but Honda has put out the video above as a little tease.
So click play and let us know what you think of it below. And yes, the screaming naturally-aspirated VTEC does sound better but it ain’t coming back, kids. So deal with it.
