Le Mans 2023 Qualifying: Ferrari draws first blood with 1-2 for Hyperpole shootout
Top eight cars that'll battle for outright pole were separated by less than a second. Game on
Ferrari has drawn first blood at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with a 1-2 finish in the first 60-minute qualifying session.
In a battle to progress to the 'Hyperpole' shootout on Thursday evening - where the top eight spots and ultimate pole position for Saturday's race will be determined - the #50 Ferrari 499P of Antonio Fuoco managed a lap of 3m 25.213s to top the timesheets.
And that's just ahead of the second Ferrari 499P entered into this year's 24hr slog, the #51 car of Alessandro Pier Guidi who initially set the pace with a time of 3m 25.412s. After that, it all gets a little Noah's Ark, with a pair of Toyotas finishing 3rd and 4th, followed by a pair of Porsche 963s (5th and 6th), the two Cadillacs (7th, 8th), a third 963 (9th), and two Peugeot 9X8s (10th, 11th). The final three that make up the Hypercar class include a third Caddy, the two Glickenhaus Hypercars and finally, a Vanwall.
The top eight times from the above will now progress through to Thursday's Hyperpole shootout - think of it like F1's Q3 quali session - to see who'll start at the front of this year's hugely anticipated 24hr race.
Astonishingly, the top eight times from Wednesday's disrupted session were separated by less than one whole second.
Game, consider yourself on.
