Ever look at your LEGO garage and find it’s in desperate need of some off-roading capability? Sounds like the perfect time to introduce the muscular, impossibly sophisticated 2019 Land Rover Defender model.

Developed in partnership with Land Rover, this detailed reproduction captures the vehicle’s beautifully crafted and sculpted surfaces. It also comes with a host of realistic functions, including All Wheel Drive with three differentials, independent suspension on both axles and a working winch. As you can see, the winch came in particularly handy for Bear Grylls…

And it’s the little extras that make this 2,500+ piece beast such a pleasure to build, from handling the very first bricks and assembling the skeleton of the car right through to attaching the stickers and exterior pieces. By the time you’re done, it feels like you really have built a car to take on any terrain, anywhere.

An embarrassment of riches awaits both under the bonnet and inside the cockpit. Open the doors and you’ll discover an elaborate cabin with a working steering wheel and detailed dashboard. There’s also the small matter of a new transmission system with two levers for engaging high or low gear ratios and a selector for changing gear – the most sophisticated LEGO TECHNIC gearbox to date. This four-speed sequential stunner is revealed when you fold the rear seats, and when you lift the bonnet you’ll find a six-cylinder engine with moving pistons. You can also turn the rear-mounted spare wheel to open the rear door.

The exterior features also take in some stunning detail, including authentically designed bodywork in the classic olive green, grey and black colour scheme, complete with Land Rover emblems. The wheels come with original-design rims with ground-gripping tyres, while on the roof there’s a removable roof rack with storage box, pannier, ladder and traction mats.
