Whatever happened to this bespoke V8-engined Aussie supercar?

What is it?

An Aussie supercar! Starting out in the late 1990s, the dream of Joss Developments, led by a guy named Matthew Thomas, was to put Australia on the supercar map, alongside Ferrari and Pagani. The recipe: a shouty, totally bespoke 6.8-litre V8 and a kerbweight below a tonne.

Did they build any?

One slightly shonky-looking prototype certainly existed and ran, but the car actually found more success in pixels, being immortalised in the Project Gotham and Forza racing game franchises. Despite long periods of fundraising and a mooted German-supplied engine deal, the Joss JT1 failed to launch.

Where is it now?

In 2011 Joss resurfaced with a restyled supercar now named JP1. It would use an Aussie V8 Supercar engine. Then in 2014 it moved to crowdfunding. But with spiralling costs and few confirmed orders the prototype was sold off in 2017 and Joss appears to have gone the way of the rest of Australia’s domestic car industry. RIP mate.
