This is Audi’s 592bhp tribute to the 90 IMSA GTO
Bonkers Audi TT Clubsport Turbo concept is a wide-arched, electric turbo monster
The Eighties Audi 90 IMSA GTO remains one of Top Gear’s coolest ever racing cars. An Audi 90 in name only, the turbocharged track car featured a 20-valve, 720bhp, 2.2-litre five-pot married up to one of the wildest bodies out there.
It was cool. Audi knows this, and has used the 2017 SEMA show to debut a concept that pays due homage to the IMSA GTO. It is this, equally monstrous Clubsport TT concept.
Information is sparse, but what little there is – much like the concept – packs a helluva punch. The one-off TT features a five-cylinder engine, just like its grandaddy, here a 2.5-litre unit hooked up to an electric turbo producing 592bhp. A little off the GTO’s power, but we’ll forgive it the odd 130bhp.
Largely because Audi reckons this mad Clubsport will get to 62mph in just 3.6secs, and from there, a top speed of 192mph flat-out. We don’t need to draw any parallels with supercar exotics to understand that this is Fast. Yep, capital F.
The concept, says Audi, takes the “TT silhouette to the extreme”, complete with the manually adjustable carbon-fibre rear wing, and that wild, wide-arched body. It is, in fact, 5.5in wider than the production TT, to “accentuate the quattro drive”.
There’s only one pic thus far, and there is no mention of any production schedule, so this is pretty much your lot. Reference it against the pic of the original IMSA GTO above, and tell us if you think the homage is an honourable one…
