A new G-Class Cabriolet is coming, and we’re not sure the camo is doing all that much
Mercedes kicks off testing of its new drop-top G-Wagen, although it has also referred to it as a “special edition”
Mercedes let slip back in September that it was working on a new G-Class Cabriolet, and now we know why. Would have been pretty tricky to keep it a secret once the prototypes like you see above were out on the road, wouldn’t it? That camouflage is fooling nobody.
Merc says that there was a “hugely positive response to the first teaser details” of its drop-top G, and testing will now begin in Austria. The engineers will then take a trip to Sweden for some proper winter testing, where they will presumably discover what removing the roof has done for the current G-Wagen’s ability to skid on a frozen lake. Important work.
Interestingly though, Merc did recently refer to the open-topped G as a “special edition”. We’ll have to wait to find out whether that means it’ll be a limited-run job like the old Maybach G650 Landaulet.
Merc only built 99 of those, but all were snapped up really rather quickly…
