'Who you gonna call?' The new Ecto-R1 is Rivian's Ghostbusters-themed electric SUV

Just... don't cross the (electric) streams

Published: 08 Oct 2026

As is tradition at this point, American carmaker Rivian has dressed up its flagship EV for Halloween, and this year, it ain’t afraid of no ghosts.

Partnering with Sony Pictures, Rivian brings The Ghostbusters back to Manhattan with the Ecto-R1, a tribute to the team’s iconic on-screen workhorse. From the 22in white-and-silver Aero wheels to the roof rack replete with paranormal-fighting accoutrement, the EV is a grin-inducing tribute to the Cadillac Miller-Meteor that found unlikely fame in the 1984 comedy.

Mercifully, this one won't need any suspension work, or shocks, or brakes, or brake pads, or lining, or steering box, transmission or even a new rear-end. Or mufflers, either, because it's an EV. But while the treatment is fun in and of itself, it’s all being done to announce the company's seasonal Halloween mode, which brings a ton of Ghostbuster-themed tricks and treats to a Rivian near you.

Starting 9 October, over-the-air updates will haunt Rivians across the country with an in-car app that brings fun modes and sound effects to the interior and exterior of the car. Inside, the driver display and touchscreen get new themed menus, along with appropriately spooky mood lighting and sounds from the films.

You can also engage in a 'Mallow Mash' mini-game on the center screen where you can see how many Mini-Pufts you can swat before the time limit.

Outside, Trick or Treat mode will fully posses your Rivian, poltergeist-style, playing the Ghostbusters theme along with a matching light show and sound effects. Motion mode will also trigger light and sound sequences if someone gets too close. Don’t cross the streams, people.

Along with a display in Rivian’s NYC space in the Meatpacking District, the Ecto-R1 will be popping up across the country, including Laguna Beach, Austin, San Francisco and Miami.

Once live, the Halloween mode sticks around until 2 November, when it will be sent back to the containment unit.
