Driving
What is it like to drive?
Perhaps the least important attribute of a campervan is how it drives, but this is TG and there’s fun to be had from pretty much anything on four wheels.
Some stats first, though. All Custom Nuggets feature a 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engine with either 128bhp or 182bhp.
The 128bhp unit can only be combined with a six-speed manual gearbox, whilst the 182bhp version gets the option of the same manual or a six-speed auto. All power is sent to the front wheels only – unlike the California which gets the (admittedly expensive) option of 4MOTION four-wheel drive.
We’ve had a go in the more powerful Nugget with the automatic gearbox. It’s an impressively smooth powertrain with more than enough grunt to shift the studio flat on wheels.
Because it’s based on the Transit it drives nicely. It turns in well and feels car-like at times, although the pots and pans in the back put a stop to any spirited driving as you approach your campsite.
