Alpine's new sports car has some aerodynamics
Yet another teaser shot, this time bragging about French Cayman's underbody aero
Alpine is brave. The last time a car company gave its new, exciting, mid-engined, turbo four-cylinder sports coupe a protracted build-up, the result was the Alfa Romeo 4C. Which was, to put it politely, not finished. If you’re going to talk up your newcomer before it goes into battle with the likes of Porsche and Lotus, you’d better be quite sure it’s a winner.
The latest teasing nugget from Alpine is this aero-themed rendering, demonstrating that the aluminum-bodied sports car will have a flat floor and functional diffuser for "significant downforce and excellent stability".
More to the point, we’re proudly told that the under-body aero is so effective, it allowed Alpine to get away with designing a body that was gorgeous first and foremost, not blighted by a heavy and inelegant rear wing. Not that that’s ever done Porsche or Lotus any harm, of course.
So, we know it’ll have a lightweight body. We now know it’ll stick to a road that’s smooth, which might make a British B-road blat a bit interesting. Hopefully, we’ll soon know if it’s fast, sounds good, or is at all decent to drive. Hurry up, Alpine…
