Classified of the week: a £100k Gulf Porsche 917
Who cares about authenticity? Bag this Le Mans tribute for 'normal' supercar money
If we’re honest, our classified of the week is rarely a bargain. Cool, rare cars are not often put up for sale without a telephone number-spec price in tow.
So in a break from tradition, allow TG.com to present to you an affordable Le Mans legend. A Porsche icon for six figures, not seven. This is a Gulf 917K, and to own it, you’ll simply need to win this eBay auction, which is currently marooned at, um, £98,000. See, it’s a steal.
What’s more, this car has been signed by bona fide motorsport legends. The likes of Jackie Oliver, Derek Bell and more. It’s a piece of Porschography.
Yes, you’re absolutely right – there is a catch. And the catch is that this isn’t an actual Porsche 917K. It’s not a 225mph, two-time Le Mans winner. But it sure looks like one.
In fact, what you’re looking at is a superb 917K replica that was completed in 2004. It’s not a Boxster underneath either – the engine is an air-cooled flat-six, displacing 3.6-litres and developing a claimed 300bhp. It’s got a five-speed manual gearbox, and the body’s fashioned from fibreglass.
All told, it might be a rather handy little sports car. A tad less lethal than the actual 917’s later 1,100bhp iterations, at any rate…
