The Vision AMG concept previews a fast future four-door Mercedes
By 2025, this concept will have transformed into the first EV developed entirely by AMG
It may bear more than a passing resemblance to the uber-efficient Mercedes Vision EQXX, but the big news is that the Vision AMG concept you see above will actually become the first-ever EV developed entirely by the AMG team in Affalterbach. And yes, we do remember the SLS AMG Electric Drive. We’re assured there will be much speed.
Potentially arriving in 2025, the four-door coupe thing that results from the Vision AMG will be based on an all-new, all-electric platform known as the AMG.EA architecture. We don’t have too many details just yet, but Mercedes has promised a high-performance, high-voltage battery and fancy, lightweight axial flux motors.
“We’re developing everything from scratch,” says AMG boss Philipp Schiemer. “From the dedicated AMG.EA platform to the revolutionary drivetrain technology with which we will take performance electric mobility to a whole new level.”
There’s plenty of learnings from the Vision EQXX – the concept that managed a real-world 1,000km (626 miles) on a single charge – chiefly because that car was so wonderfully aerodynamic. That’s why the Vision AMG gets that teardrop shape cockpit, very few shut lines and a similarly long-but-chopped tail. We’re guessing it’ll need actual windows to transform it into a road car, though. Just a hunch.
The aero-spec wheels are inspired by those on Merc’s 2022 F1 car (as is the Petronas colouring on the sills and above the diffuser) and we’re loving those afterburner-style rear lights. Not so sure on the headlights though – AMG reckons that’s a Merc star-shaped signature, but is anyone else getting angry ant vibes? The insect that is, not the small Geordie.
Anyway, we’re getting off topic. The Vision AMG gets an illuminated AMG-style grille and crucially four seats inside, although Merc has yet to give us a look at the potential interior. Time will tell if it gets the Vision EQXX’s 47.5-inch 8k screen.
That’s about all we know so far, so let us know your first impressions in the comments section below. And if it isn’t for you, what would you want to see from an AMG EV?
