Ford is planning an all-electric performance SUV: the Mach 1
Blue Oval is investing billions of dollars into making EVs ‘stir the soul’
Ford went a little Back to the Future at the Detroit motor show: a nod to its past with the reveal of the limited-edition Ford Mustang Bullitt, built to honour the original 1968 halo ‘Stang and that amazing car chase.
Then, to the future: the company has announced a brand new all-electric performance SUV that promises to bring some excitement into the world of electricity and movement. It will be called Mach 1.
In a little clip played before the Detroit audience, we saw a Mustang and Explorer drive into a factory, followed by a little clap of thunder and lightning. Mach 1 was the name of a special edition Mustang back in the late Sixties, denoting more performance.
Ford’s Jim Farley admitted that “it’s too soon to show” more on the Mach 1, but we do know it’ll arrive in 2020. Ford, in fact, has pledged an $11 billion investment into developing battery electric vehicles, in a bid to “stir the soul”.
“It’s the beginning of a whole new world for our customers,” Farley added.
Will it sit on a Mustang platform with the space of an Explorer? Will it sit on an Explorer platform with the feel of a Mustang? Will it be powered by 1.21 gigawatts of power... say, like a bolt of lightning? Only time will tell, but why not use that time to let us know your thoughts on a Ford-badged, electric performance SUV...
