Candela's new electric boat is powered by the battery from a Polestar 2
Polestar’s electric propulsion takes to boats like ducks take to water
Boatmaker Candela has launched the new Candela C-8 in partnership with fellow Swedish brand Polestar. The ‘Powered by Polestar’ electric boat will cover 57 nautical miles on one charge, at a cruising speed of 22 knots.
Boasting the same 69kWh battery pack and DC charging tech as the Polestar 2 single motor, the Candela C-8 is not so much a boat, as it is a wonderfully futuristic hydrofoil.
The electrification of this sea-going vessel makes the marvellous question of whether EVs can be driven in rain entirely redundant. The Candela C-8 has a high-speed range two to three times longer than conventional electric speedboats.
Gustav Hasselskog, CEO and founder of Candela explains: “With batteries from Polestar, the Candela C-8 becomes the first electric vessel that can travel to destinations that were previously only reachable by combustion engine boats. The Candela C-8 powered by Polestar marks a significant breakthrough for electrification at sea.”
The partnership between Polestar and Candela was announced in August 2022, seeing the Swedish EV maker supply its batteries and power technology - for the first time externally - to Candela’s fancy water shuttles.
“Sharing know-how on batteries and vehicle engineering with Candela will help reach our shared goal of transitioning to a future where all forms of transport are sustainable,” says Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of Polestar.
