Renault wants this fan-built R5 Turbo 3E to become an official Lego set
Built from around 1,200 bricks, we’re rather fond of this blocky little pretender
The Renault 5 Turbo 3E is a fantastically bonkers hot hatch with carbon bucket seats, a hydraulic handbrake and two in-wheel electric motors out back that make a total of 547bhp. It also has brilliantly boxy arches that are stuck on the sides of the current R5’s retrotastic body, and not only does that make it look completely excellent, but it turns out it makes it rather easy to recreate in Lego form.
“Angular cars are easier to do in Lego, so the R5 was a natural choice,” says British engineer Dave Collins, who put this set together and has submitted it to the Lego Ideas platform.
“Plus, it looks great, and it’s immediately recognisable as an update of the Eighties classic. I’ve certainly tried to race a few off the lights in my youth.”
We say easy, but this 1,200-piece set still took Collins around 100 hours to create. It now needs 10,000 supporters on the Ideas site to be in with a chance of becoming an official Lego set, and Renault itself is backing the campaign to get it there.
There’s no word on how much the brick built Turbo 3E would cost if it were to reach proper production, but we’d wager it’d be slightly less than the £140,000 you’d need for one of the 1,980 full size versions.
