Lexus confirms 300bhp, GR Yaris-engined LBX Morizo RR for Japan

Uh oh, we're getting excited over a crossover. And yet, this is actually quite an exciting crossover for once, because it’s the Lexus LBX Morizo RR.

You may remember that name from the concept first revealed at the 2024 Tokyo Auto Salon in January. You may also recognise ‘Morizo’ as being the racing alias of Toyota boss Akio Toyoda.

So, the Morizo RR is essentially a sporty version of the plain-but-really-quite-nice LBX. The Morizo will sit on a dedicated platform though, and it uses the 1.6-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine from a Toyota GR Yaris to make 300bhp and 295lb ft of torque. There’s electronically controlled full-time AWD, a 0-62mph sprint of 5.2 seconds, and the option of an eight-speed automatic or… a six-speed manual gearbox. Result.

Naturally it's a smidgen wider and lower than a standard LBX, and comes with forged 19in wheels, the obligatory chunky bodykit and fancy dampers.

“With LBX Morizo RR, our focus was on refining the motorsports-based powertrain developed by GR while ensuring it is still infused with the distinctive Lexus refinement,” says development driver Masahiro Sasaki.

“Through agile development and extensive testing, both the car and the people involved in its creation experienced significant growth. We remain committed to crafting Lexus vehicles filled with excitement and playful spirit that car enthusiasts like Morizo will find truly exhilarating.”

And now, the bad news. Lexus will only offer the Morizo RR in Japan, and there’s no word on whether it’ll make it over to our shores. Orders are open, mind, and there will be a lottery for 100 additional units that go through a ‘bespoke build’ process to customise the interior colours, seat materials, seatbelt and brake caliper colours.
