Why hello! It’s the new Mini Cooper Convertible, yours from £26,200

And it'll be available in 161bhp ‘C’ or 201bhp ‘S’ versions. Ready the go-kart analogies

Published: 08 Oct 2024

Mini has completed its overhaul of the next-generation Cooper hatch models with this: the new Convertible. You can choose from two powertrain choices and three trim levels from launch. Being a Mini, there’s the added excitement of a seemingly infinite pool of colour combinations too.

Those engines - a pair of petrol three pots - are offered in two power bands: ‘C’ and ‘S’. In the former, it’s good for 161bhp, 184lb ft, an 8.2s 0-62mph time and 137 flat out. The S improves on that with 201bhp and 221lb ft, while the 0-62 is cut to 6.9s and the top speed is raised to 150.

Mini has also gone to town on the suspension and damping systems for this generation of Cooper, which should raise a smile or two on a top-down coastal cruise under the sun. Precisely what these cars are made for.

Speaking of that soft top roof, it takes 18 seconds to open (or 15 to close) and can be done while whistling along at 19mph. Better still, it can be left part-opened at 40cm to become a sunroof. Nice touch.

There are three trim levels to choose from too. Between the Classic, Exclusive and Sport versions, you’ll get various 16-18in alloys and contrasting grille and brake caliper finishes.

A range of patterns and colours are available for the dashboard and upholstery, while that 9.5in central OLED display can even be voice-activated to summon its resident four-legged overlord, Spike, who’ll carry out most of your functionality requests in exchange for virtual puppuccinos. OK, that’s not true, but how adorable would that be?

Mini reckons on 160-litres of boot space with the roof open (or 215 with it closed), and a downward-opening tailgate for easier unloading. There’s also an integrated rollover protection system hidden behind the headrests which activates as soon as the safety lock is engaged.

Prices start at £26,200 for C and £30,600 for the S, with deliveries set to commence early next year. Now, Mini, about this whole puppuccino thing...
