EA WRC is just casually dropping a VR mode for free

67 new Rally Moments and 30 customisation items are also on the way

Published: 05 Apr 2024

Looks like that old maxim about rally drivers just being 'a bit different' extends as far as rally game developers, too. The Codemasters team in charge of 2023’s wonderfully slippy EA WRC are an unnaturally generous lot, and have just announced an upcoming VR update, along with the contents of WRC’s fourth update, coming April 9th.

Top of the billing is of course that VR mode, which brings you that bit closer to sitting terrified in the bucket seat of a dangerously torque-laden hatchback.

EA’s F1 series, also developed by Codemasters, has supported VR for the last few iterations now and we’re expecting to see it implemented to that same high standard here. It’s intended to “elevate the WRC player experience by adding an unprecedented level of immersion, bringing them closer than ever to the thrill of driving a rally car.” Translation: keep a sick bucket handy.

There’s no firm release date for VR yet, but there is a trailer available now which shows a bit of in-game footage of it in action.

More imminent is the catchily titled Update 4 content, which brings 67 new ‘Moments’ scenarios to the game. A rather generous haul. These one-off stages choose the car, stage and time of day for you, and task you with hitting a particular objective - a stage time, a maximum damage level, and so on. Like the existing Moments, this new batch takes its cues from the real 2024 WRC season and classic rally moments from years gone by.

Players will also get 30 new customisation items and 20 new Rally Pass levels – any excuse to keep grinding.
