Feeling nostalgic? Physical copies of Top Racer Collection and Glover are headed to PS4 & PS5
A vintage arcade racer with an odd connection to TG, and the best game ever made about a glove
Our ears are burning, and not just because London’s doing its finest impression of Death Valley this week. No, it’s also because Physical Mania’s just announced plans to release physical editions of Top Racer Collection on PS4 and PS5 - the series otherwise known as, er, Top Gear.
The fondly remembered 16-bit racing games were the work of Gremlin Graphics, who were either really big fans of BBC2’s programming at the time or wanted to give a nod to the manual transmission option in their new name. When the first game hit the SNES in 1992, changing gears was quite a novelty.
The collection includes Top G- sorry, Top Racer, Top Racer 2 and Top Racer 3000, along with a new online PvP mode which obviously wasn’t present back in the SNES originals. Nice to see the pixelated rear ends of those Testarossa and Countach-alikes again, isn’t it?
Pre-orders are due to start shortly, so publisher Physical Mania’s sounding the horn for anyone interested to sign up to their mailing list via their official site for more info.
Also in the pipeline for a physical release on PS4 is Glover, the late ‘90s platform game for Nintendo 64 and the original PlayStation in which you play – and stay with us for this one – a magical glove tasked with saving the Crystal Kingdom by collecting crystals.
Why an anthropomorphic mitten was the best man for that job remains a mystery to this day, but Glover was a hit on both N64 and PS1 so plenty will have nostalgic leanings towards it.
Come to think of it, however odd it might seem for us to be writing about the Top Gear games, imagine being Donald Glover in 1998 when Glover released…
