Tony Hawk Pro Skater’s socials tease some imminent 25th anniversary activity
In other news: yes, the series is 25 years old and that makes us ancient
Ordinarily, the sight of a videogame’s social media account updating its banners wouldn’t be stopping the presses at TG, but hear us out – Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater has just refreshed its imagery on YouTube, X (Twitter) and Facebook. The new banners celebrate the series’ 25th anniversary, and in doing so create a rather pregnant pause.
It’s unlikely that THPS’s marketing team would go to the trouble of doing this without following through on, well, something that actually celebrated the series’ milestone, and in conjunction with the fact that these images bear a 2024 copyright (spotted by Eurogamer) suggest that grinds and Christ Airs are soon to be back on the menu.
The copyright suggests Activision’s renewed the licenses for the Tony Hawk’s IP, and that points to some form of remaster on the way.
Back in 2020, Activision released a couple of marvellous remasters for Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1&2, capturing the particular feel of the original games’ skating controls but building it all in Unreal Engine. They’re as good as remasters get.
The next logical step, then, would be for numbers 3&4 to get the same treatment. And that was the plan at one time too, before the developer Vicarious Visions merged with Activision-Blizzard and the plan was scrapped.
The new Facebook banner in particular suggests a month-long anniversary celebration, so whether or not we do see an announcement of a remaster (please, anything but a new version of Tony Hawk’s Ride), fans of pavement-scraping wallet chains and anti-establishment T-shirt artwork will have at least some reasons to rejoice.
