The Mahindra Roxor is the greatest thing you’ll see today

Mahindra’s US-only off-roader gets a new face and all of our love

Published: 24 Jan 2020

Welcome, people of the Internet, to the new Mahindra Roxor. Now, even if your knowledge of US-market off-road vehicles is limited, you might be aware of the previous generation. That’s thanks to the legal hullabaloo between Mahindra and FCA – which claims the old Roxor had the face of a Jeep, despite Mahindra actually building old Jeeps under licence for the Indian market for the past 70 years.

Anyway, let’s not get bogged down in that now. The court case is still ongoing, but Mahindra has given the 2020 Roxor a new face – perhaps in a bid to appease FCA somewhat. Isn’t it cute.

The Roxor is known as a side-by-side and isn’t road-legal in the US – apparently, one would use it to get across a ranch or to go hunting in retro style. It’s a proper old-school off-roader, though. There’s a steel frame, 4WD, leaf spring suspension and a choice of either a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic gearbox.

The only engine option is a sturdy 2.5-litre turbo diesel, although it somehow only produces 62bhp. Sixty-two. We’ve had sneezes that were more powerful than that. Top speed? 55mph. Torque is a decent 144lb ft, though, and the Roxor has a towing capacity of just under 1,600kg.

Prices start at $16,599, but there really are endless options. No really – just look at what we managed to create on the configurator…

Those tracks are a hefty $16,995, but are perhaps the coolest option for any car ever.

Mahindra says there are almost 100 accessories and 400 custom colours to choose from, but it really will make you pay for everything. Want a windscreen and wipers? That’ll be $1409.99. A roof over the front two seats? $564.99. An extra two seats in the back? $999.99. Crikey.

Still, nothing can dampen our new-found love for the Roxor. What do you reckon, Internet?
