Hennessey is considering a 1,000bhp all-electric Venom GT supercar

Texan tuner says hyper-EV is possible, and confirms F5 will arrive in 2017

Watch out, world: Hennessey is considering an all-electric Venom GT.

Speaking to TopGear.com at the SEMA show, John Hennessey promised a potential 1,000bhp all electric hypercar 'would be a reality very soon'.

“We’re considering doing something with electricity,” Hennessey said. “We’ve looked at it and I’ve got friends in that field, I’m just waiting for the batteries to become lighter and have more capacity. But I don’t think that’s far away.”

Weight is key for Hennessey. Right now an all-electric Venom packing enough batteries to give it a decent range would weigh north of two tonnes, too much for a lightweight hypercar.

Nor is Hennessey interested in hybrids. Though John admits the technology employed by other hypercar makers is commendable, that's not a consideration for the Venom either.

“Ferrari, Porsche and McLaren have done a great job at proving that hybrid technology works, but I’m not interested in hybrids,” John said. “I’d only do the Venom with an engine or as a straight electric".

The current Venom of course, is no slouch. Powered by a 7.0-litre twin-turbo GM-sourced V8, the 1,451bhp GT is already capable of 270+mph, proving there's still plenty of mileage left in good ol' internal combustion.

And while we had Hennessey’s attention, we tried to eke out some extra information on the Venom’s successor: the F5.

As you might remember, that’s the rival to the upcoming Bugatti Veyron replacement and the Koenigsegg Regera. We’re told that a lot of technology from the Venom will be carried over to the new car, but it’ll have its own bespoke chassis, a carbon fibre monocoque, similar powertrain, a paddle-shift single-clutch transmission, and more interior space. John reckons it'll clock in at a tiny bit heavier than the 1,244kg Venom.

Hennessey hasn't yet specified a power output for the F5, because he’s waiting to see what power figure Bugatti comes to battle with next year. Expect it to be 'a lot'.

The company is in the process of building a prototype F5 to begin testing next year, and we're told that there's a strong chance you'll see one wrapped in bin bags and hooning around the 'Ring in the not-too-distant future. 

What about the real thing? Expect to see a full-scale model of the F5 at the Geneva motor show in 2017, with the production car arriving later that year...
