Mugen’s modified Honda Freed proves why we need to get back onboard with MPVs
New hybrid JDM minivan gets the tuner treatment. Looks better than any crossover in Europe
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: we really do need to welcome back the MPV with open arms on our shores. Practicality is cool people, particularly when Mugen is involved.
Because this is the Honda tuner’s take on the new Freed – a chunky little six-seat hybrid Honda MPV that can be specced with four-wheel drive and even comes in Crosstar trim with slightly raised suspension and some black plastic cladding. No, you don't really need that SUV or crossover.
Mugen hasn’t released full details of its changes just yet, but these pictures clearly show some sportier styling with a new front splitter, side skirts, a diffuser and a rear spoiler on the standard Freed. All highly important aero additions for a 1.5-litre engined MPV, of course.
It looks great though, as does the Crosstar with its new aftermarket alloy wheels, Mugen branding and camouflage graphics. Mugen says the two minivans were based on a concept of ‘sports for everyone’, which is just really rather wholesome, isn’t it?
Orders will open in Japan later this year, with the full parts and prices lineup released shortly.
