ABT is building a restomod Audi Ur-Quattro with 523bhp
German tuner takes a break from remapping RS3s and RSQ8s to work on a throwback special
When Hans-Jürgen Abt took over the family tuning business from his father in the late 1980s, he also inherited an Audi Ur-Quattro. And of course, he set about modifying it immediately.
“I widened the wings and modified it with parts from the Sport Quattro, such as the front grille, lights and white magnesium rims – so it was a completely unique car,” says Abt. “I drove the Quattro myself for two or three years, and since then it has been part of our company’s exhibition.”
Hans-Jürgen’s old Quattro was also making a healthy 444bhp, but now his eponymous company has blasted that out of the water with a limited-run of 523bhp restomods.
Unveiled Steve Jobs-style at the end of the recent ‘Friends of ABT’ event, the ABT Ur-Quattro was initially intended to be limited to just 25 examples, but all of those sold out within three hours so the German tuner opened up five more slots for loyal customers.
There’s not even a huge amount of detail on the car available just yet, but we are told it’ll use a 2.5-litre engine to make that monster power figure. Of course, that could be a heavily modified, bored-out version of the original car’s 2.1 or 2.2-litre five-pot, but given the displacement it’s probably more likely to be a flashed version of the current RS3’s engine.
All of the restomods will be built from original Ur-Quattros and will retain their original chassis. There are Kevlar carbon fibre body panels all round and a wide arch body kit inspired by the Sport Quattro. Plenty of new vents on that bonnet too. There’s also a hefty spoiler out back, and ABT has mentioned the presence of ABS and an ‘invisible roll cage’. Each car will get an ABT Individual interior too, whatever that means.
Looking forward to a 500bhp+ Quattro?
