Tolman has restored and doubled the power of this classic Mini

Cool fact: it once even shared a track with a Ferrari 250 GTO

Published: 19 Dec 2024

We like the classic Electrogenic Mini, but we also like this combustion-powered one-off by Tolman - whose work with 205 GTIs you’ll be familiar with. And how’s this for a cool fact: this particular Mini even shared track time with a 250 GTO. Yes, that one.

Though it was probably left trailing by the mythical Ferrari, Tolman’s upgrades should on paper... yeah the Fezza would stil whup it. Who cares: the tiny four-pot has almost double the power (90bhp/80lb ft) and the car still weighs less than a tin of biscuits.

Probably sounds nicer too with its shiny new stainless steel exhaust, with other upgrades including adjustable hydraulic suspension and better brakes.

Over the year-long overhaul, Tolman stripped the car down to its bare shell and restored every body panel, patching up blemishes to make this Mk2 Mini look… like a shiny new Mk2 Mini. Albeit one that’s in even better nick than when it left the factory. Maybe.

Beneath the ‘Tartan Red’ and black roof exterior, Tolman’s made a few quality-of-life changes too like reupholstered leather seats and LED lighting. Modern S-Classes, beware.

What do we reckon then folks? One hand up in the comments for Electrogenic’s attempt and two for Tolman’s.
