Cadillac have been controversially promoted to the top of the Formula One constructors’ championship following an ‘extraordinary’ high profile intervention, sources have told TopGear.com.
The fledgling American F1 team, currently languishing at the bottom of the standings in their debut season, have been moved ahead of Mercedes after a ‘late night phone call’ to the FIA demanding a review.
Sources close to Cadillac noted how the ‘high profile’ call also asked the FIA to review the decision to employ Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas as the team’s drivers, requesting they be replaced with American NASCAR icon Dale Earnhardt Jr and fictional Piston Cup winner Lightning McQueen.
“Cadillac. Great company. Some say the greatest. They make the best cars. Better than the world has ever seen and I’m someone who really understands cars,” the call reportedly went.
“I saw all the Formula Ones. Every single one. Great people. Great cars, all of them. A lot of people are saying I understand the driving better than their own drivers.
“I’m a person that understands the Formula One sports teams and I know Cadillac are fast. Really fast. We’ve got to have the best cars competing against each other and the other Formula Ones need to have their best Formula Ones, and if we win or lose, it’s fair.
“The top teams? Someone should take a look into their records. Some people are saying that. A lot of people are saying Cadillac are faster. Better. It’s very suspect."
Sources close to F1 have said USA striker Folarin Balogun would shortly be promoted to the role of Cadillac team principal.
