Volvo Trucks’ next-gen FH Electric is claimed to offer up to 373 miles of range
Is this one of the big leaps the e-truck industry needs?
Volvo’s next-generation ‘FH Electric’ truck will travel up to a claimed 373 miles (600 kilometres) on a single charge and is set for release during the latter half of 2025. The development represents something of a breakthrough for the electric truck segment and essentially means lorryists can complete a full day’s work without having to stop and charge.
It also means exactly twice the current FG Electric’s range of 186 miles (300 kilometres), which comes courtesy of a sextet of batteries combined to offer up to 490kW of power.
No word yet on just how the new powertrain will look, but we do know Volvo will achieve this by revamping its driveline technology, dubbed the ‘e-axle’. Its redesign has essentially opened up more space for increased battery capacity, and coupled with improved efficiency and management systems, means a higher range is achievable.
“Our new electric flagship will be a great complement to our wide range of electric trucks and enable zero-exhaust emission transport for longer distances,” says the president of Volvo Trucks, Roger Alm. “It will be a great solution for transport companies with a high annual mileage on their trucks and with a strong commitment to reduce CO2.”
The new FH Electric forms part of Volvo Trucks' wider plan of going net-zero by 2040, with the idea being to offer three types of powertrains: battery electric, fuel cell electric and traditional ICE engines which run on green fuels like hydrogen or biogas.
