The Ford Mustang Dark Horse SC Convertible will tear your hair out with 784bhp

Quick, look over here everyone! It’s a new car that isn’t being unveiled at Monterey Car Week… and it is loud.

At least, we’re assuming it is. Ford says about its new Dark Horse SC Convertible – revealed at Woodward Dream Cruise in Detroit – that “without a barrier between the driver and the sky, the cabin offers endless headroom and the full, unfiltered soundtrack of a deep V8 rumble mixed with the distinct whine of the supercharger".

Because yes, this is a Mustang Convertible that has been given the full SC coupe treatment. And if you don’t remember that particular variant, it was a Mustang Coupe unveiled at the start of this year with a very lightly detuned version of the full-fat GTD’s 5.2-litre supercharged V8. Less aero, though.

That engine sends a frankly terrifying 784bhp and 660lb ft of torque to the SC Convertible’s rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, and we’re told this drop-top gets ‘specially tuned’ MagneRide suspension.

“If the coupe is the race-bred side of our DNA, this convertible is the pure street cred part of the formula,” said Ford Racing boss Mark Rushbrook.

That’s not to say it’ll flex like a Fox Body convertible, though. Among other bits, Ford has added a magnesium brace right across the engine in an attempt to strap it down and stiffen things up. No word on whether the coupe’s Track Pack will make it across here, but that included carbon fibre wheels, carbon ceramic brakes and extra carbon aero bits.

“Both the Dark Horse SC coupe and convertible have been developed by our Ford Racing engineers,” said Arie Groeneveld, chief engineer for the Mustang Dark Horse SC. “But instead of prioritising the convertible for setting lap times, we’ve engineered it to be the ultimate top-down grand touring machine.”

Perhaps a full Track Pack wouldn’t be right, then. Still, at least it has that engine.

Ford hasn’t mentioned any pricing just yet, but we do know that cars will start arriving with dealers in Spring next year. So, coupe or convertible?
