The Toyota Corolla FX Edition is a pretty boring hatch… that now looks completely excellent
Toyota revives the spirit of its Corolla FX16 with a 1980s inspired special edition
The current generation Toyota Corolla is actually a really handsome hatchback. We probably haven’t given it enough credit for its design since it first arrived back in 2018, but a new US special edition has reignited our interest.
This is the Corolla Hatchback FX Edition – a brilliantly bright tribute to the E80 generation FX16 of the 1980s. And heck, while this isn’t even a full-fat GR Corolla, we absolutely love it.
In fact, this tangerine dream is based on the entry level SE trim but gets a black vented rear spoiler, 18in gloss white alloy wheels and a ‘heritage-inspired’ rear badge as a throwback to the FX16. It’s also available in three colours – this ‘Inferno’ (orange), Ice Cap (white) and Blue Crush Metallic (erm, blue). Go for the orange, surely?
Inside we’re told there will be black ‘Sport Touring Seats’ with suede inserts. You’ll get orange stitching too on the aforementioned seats, the door panels, the steering wheel and the boot underneath the gear shifter.
Just 1,600 examples of the Corolla Hatchback FX Edition will be built for US customers, with cars expected to arrive in dealerships later this year, bound with the standard 2.0-litre 167bhp four-pot engine. The petition to get this look on a GR Corolla starts here.
