Video: this 200mph NASCAR save will make you gasp

Erik Jones turns inevitable crash into stylish drift in his Toyota at the Brickyard 400

Published: 26 Jul 2016

We love a good racing save. This, though, is one of the best we’ve seen in a long time, especially considering it must have happened at something approaching 200mph.

It happened in the NASCAR at the weekend’s Brickyard 400 at the Indianapolis Speedway. Erik Jones was driving his Toyota Camry when a rear tyre blew out.

Cue a huge swing sideways, seemingly towards the wall, which Jones catches admirably before holding – intentionally or not – one of the quickest, most outlandish drifts we’ve seen in a long time. And we work with Chris Harris.

Alright, so the final collection could be cleaner. But then this was at three-digit speeds. On steep banking. In the Brickyard 400. Note Jones doesn’t lose a single place in his super-stylish wall avoidance.

Somewhat incidentally, the race was won by Kyle Busch, also in a Toyota. He led for 149 of the 170 laps. Elsewhere, Tony Stewart finished 11th in his final race at Indy, with his retirement coming at the end of the season.

For those of us with only passing knowledge in NASCAR world, though, it’s all about that drift. Have a peek at it above, and see if you can resist watching it over and over again…
