Audi A5 (2016-2024) review

This is where the A5 comes into its own. Yes, it essentially shares a cabin with the A4 saloon, but in this instance that is categorically Not A Bad Thing. Just look at it – the interior design and quality is top class, making the A5 feel like a properly premium coupe. The leathers, woods and metals are all tactile and of real quality.

It’s genuinely useable too. The 12.3-inch digital cockpit is clear and offers a setting with simple round dials, and the smaller 10.1-inch touchscreen is quick to react (but was easier to use when it was operated with a clickwheel instead of your pokes and prods. The climate controls are kept separate for ease of access and feature some lovely touch sensitive buttons that make a mockery of all those who think the system would be better off buried in a sub-menu somewhere. 

And a special mention for the boot space. Not something we’d often celebrate but 450-litres is more than enough. Our only gripes? The seating position is a touch too high – six footers with tall hair might find it brushes on the roof lining. 

As for the rear seats – there’s space back there for an adult or two. Just don’t leave them back there for too long. Kids will be fine. Still, anyone planning on carrying people in the back of an A5 regularly ought to look at the Sportback instead.
