The Top Gear car review:Audi R8 Spyder

Running costs and reliability

It starts at around £130,000, but a £150k R8 Spyder is just a few option clicks away. Just a couple if you go for the R8 Spyder Plus. That adds numerous things: another 69bhp, bucket seats, loads of carbon (including a fixed rear spoiler), ceramic brakes and the performance steering wheel with a dial that twiddles the car through more focused driving modes. The options all together would make up the £15k long before you’d consider the extra power, so miraculously, the £145k Plus is the best value car in the range. Some TG maths for you right there.

If you think those prices look intense then consider this is really plush, a proper supercar. The standard seven-speed paddleshifter is superb and makes long distance cruising easier than you might imagine. Shame the front luggage compartment is small, and its 112 litres inconveniently shaped; the 2+2 Porsche 911 Turbo cabrio is so much more practical. But it doesn’t wail like an R8…
