Buying

What should I be paying?

BMW expects the Gran Coupe will outsell the coupe and convertible combined, and to be honest we can see why. It’s a more natural and less contradictory car. As mentioned, the 840i feels like a real sweet spot and is the cheapest way into an Eight full stop, not to mention half the price of an M8. And much less hurtful when it comes to depreciation.

For running costs, it’s the 840d that naturally sticks its head up above the others, starting at four grand more than the 840i – but with all-wheel drive and four-wheel steer as standard – and claiming mid 40s mpg as well as a quicker 0-62mph time. Just be sure you won’t be equally as happy with the lighter, lither petrol version first. It really does possess a belter of a powertrain and may be less vulnerable to wanton Government rule changes over the coming years.
