What should I be paying?

The price is fixed at £39,990. One model, all extras and colours included, except an electric tow bar. Yes, it'll haul 1,500kg.

The kit list really is a deep-breath job: 20in wheels, LED lighting all round, pop-out door handles, phone app key, electric adjustment for the heated and cooled front seats, a heat pump, 360 degree cameras, HUD and multi-coloured ambient lighting, glass roof, full driver assist, vehicle to load power.

Insurance is helped by a solid five star Euro NCAP, and warranty is seven years and 100,000 miles for the car and eight/120 for the battery.

Changan has done diligent preparation for launch. There's already a big warehouse in Britain stocked with spares, a dealer network, a well-organised back office. To assuage fears about data in China, all the connected customer and vehicle data is held in Germany to GDPR standards.

To reduce insurance cost, Changan worked with Thatcham to make the car and remote unlocking as proof as poss against Britain's world-class crims.
