Buying

What should I be paying?

In the UK, you’re looking at three grades: Icon, Design, and Excel. The 168bhp FWD Icon opens the bidding at £39,175, for which you get the dinky 57.7kWh battery, 18in alloys, automatic wipers, electric heated mirrors, keyless entry, a reversing camera, the 14in touchscreen with phone mirroring, those wireless charging pads, adaptive cruise control, and heated front seats and steering wheel.

Not too shabby, and at a similar opening price point to most of the competition. Although others give you more battery (and power) for the money, so just bear that in mind.

Stepping up to the 73.1kWh battery and more powerful front motor means climbing up to the mid-spec Design model for £45,260. This adds a 360-degree camera and a windshield de-icer, and unlocks the 352-mile range.

Then you've got the top-spec Excel, which is just as powerful but drops the range to 319 miles on account of its 20in wheels. Here the front seats become ventilated, the rears become heated, the upholstery is synthetic leather throughout and you get the 22kW AC charging capability too. That one's £47,195.

Finally you can go all-wheel drive for £51,010. The extra power - 338bhp, all told - makes it rapid, but comes at the cost of dropping the range below 300 miles.

Which one should I choose?

Get the middle-spec Design - you'll be thankful for the extra range in the winter months and going AWD feels like a waste of six grand to us.

Toyota will give you one on a PCP deal for just over £500 a month over three-and-a-half years with an initial deposit of £4,500 ish. Do shop around though.

Toyota’s big battery warranty offers a truckload of peace of mind. Try 10 years on the battery and a million kilometres (with three-years/60k on the rest of the car) provided you have them inspect it annually. In fact, the bare numbers don’t actually do the bZ4X justice – it might be a very hassle-free ownership prospect.
