Composed, high-grade materials and tech, muscle car heritage
Rear three-quarter vision, divisive new front styling
What is it?
The best handling, highest performing muscle cars? That’s the Camaro range. Model for model, on a street circuit, a Camaro will simply drive away from an equally specced and powered Mustang or Challenger. The range-topping ZL1 1LE model is so fast it can trouble track weapons like Porsches and Ferraris. They are lighter, better balanced, have better suspension and many other things besides than the Ford or Dodge.
But the Camaro is also one of the first muscle cars to really reinvent the way it looks, which thrills some and upsets others with more traditional tastes. The smallest engine you can get is a 2.0-litre 275bhp turbocharged four. Then there are V6, V8, and supercharged V8 options.
What's the verdict?
Of all the original pony cars, the Camaro is now truly more sportscar than muscle car. If you like the looks and can see past the rear three quarter lack of vision, it is a surprisingly capable and enjoyable car to drive and own. Buy the 2.0T over the V6 and the V8 if you want the full experience. The supercharged V8s are memorable for all the right reasons.
