Buying

What should I be paying?

VW is pitching in with the ID. Polo in ‘Trend’ trim in Germany as an entry-level prospect for €24,995 – about £21,500. Though that’s not confirmed for the UK.

The offer for the UK is Polo Life and Polo Style, with a Launch Edition of both. The Life with the 37kWh battery and 114bhp is the cheapest one at £23,945, with the 133bhp 37kWh variant at £25,055 and the Launch Edition £500 more.

The 52kWh Style (208bhp) is £31,745, with the Launch Edition weighing in at £32,995.

And what kit do I get with those?

So Life gets 17-inch alloys, one-zone climate, driving modes, parking sensors and a rear-view camera, DAB, wireless connect and charging and a few other bits. The Launch Edition of that gets two-zone climate, heated front seats, sat-nav and heated elements for an extra £500.

The Style gets 18-inch alloys, two-zone climate, heated front seats, ID Light and ambient interior glows, light-up logos on the outside, LED matrix headlights and LED rear lights, nav and ‘sports comfort’ seats, with the Launch Edition throwing in a panoramic glass roof, electric heated/massage front seats, area view camera, park assist pro, rear privacy glass and a tow bar for an extra £1,250.

Best one if you had to choose?

As ever, the ‘best’ compromise between kit and cost is probably somewhere in the middle of the range, with a couple of your most-preferred options as garnish.
As for which battery to pick, convenience is king, and range is convenience, so unless you’re really committed to the urban side of things, we’d recommend the bigger battery. You’ll just be charging up less, and the ID. Polo offers a wider breadth of ability if you use it to actually drive somewhere a reasonable distance away.
