The Ford Mustang GTD's V8 makes the finest noise of the year, and here's why
The Top Gear Award goes to Ford's unhinged 'Ring special and its eight-cylinder soundtrack
The Ford Mustang GTD is a remarkable piece of engineering in so many ways. Its inboard pushrod rear suspension – viewable through a portal window in the rear – is 2025’s coolest and most mesmerising feature.
Its active aero systems at the front and rear tame this 815bhp lunatic into something that’s locked down and predictable on track.
Then there’s Multimatic’s adaptive spool valve damper technology with hydraulically actuated dual spring rates and height (try saying that after a few sherries). Essentially, they can slam it by 40mm in track mode – like the Ford GT.
There’s bodywork that’s been on the creatine, a titanium exhaust, magnesium wheels... the list goes on.
And what have we singled out to award it for? That’s right, the primordial noise it yields from a dry sumped 5.2-litre supercharged V8.
Childish? Us? Never! This isn’t just noise though, it’s physical, lumpy soundwaves, so robust you can chew on them. A rasping V8 roar that might be commonplace in the US, but to everyone else registers as a glorious F-you to all the church mouse EVs.
It’s filthy, but we love it.
