This is a small, modern version of the RWD 110 R. Build it immediately, Skoda

Skoda designer sketches out an update to Skoda's classic coupe. Just take our money now

Alongside their work on things like the dinky new Epiq crossover and the all-electric Vision O estate concept, Skoda’s designers have recently been delving into the carmaker’s back catalogue to reimagine classics using the current ‘Modern Solid’ design language.

And as much as we liked the Skoda Felicia Fun at the beginning of this month, if it were put to a vote we’d want this supremely cool modern-day 110 R to make production.

Penned by Richard Švec, a member of Skoda’s digital modelling team, it’s a rework of the little rear-engined, rear-wheel drive coupe from the 1970s, but also works in wide arches, a roll cage, centre-lock wheels and a vented bonnet to pay tribute to the motorsport-spec 130 RS.

Apparently Švec’s vision was for a car “for young drivers who love motorsport yet also want an elegant coupé for everyday use”. That’s certainly something we can get behind. Although being a modern reinterpretation, it would of course feature an electric powertrain. We’re told the air intakes underneath the rear side windows are functional and that they would be used for battery cooling.

There are concealed headlights too, plus illuminated logos, cameras to replace the side mirrors and the same ‘Tech-loop’ lighting signature as found on the aforementioned Vision O.

“I didn’t want to take the retro route,” explains Švec. “My aim was to create a completely new form while carefully integrating subtle nods to the character-defining features of the 110 R. I wanted the design to feel as innovative as possible.

“Each element had to be treated with care – to avoid slipping into retro territory while still preserving the car’s identity. From the very beginning, it was clear that finding the right balance of proportions and volumetric shaping would be the key.”

Those proportions look spot on to us in the digital world, and just imagine if Skoda could get this thing anywhere close to the original 110 R’s 880kg kerbweight…
