Good grief, check out Subaru’s pointy new STI concept

Subaru shows off the future of its performance arm at the Tokyo Motor Show. Features a strange fake wing

Published: 29 Oct 2025

Subaru has rocked up to the Tokyo Motor Show aiming to stand out as a “different” brand as it attempts to “deepen the bonds and emotional connection” with its customers.

To do this it’s taking a two-pronged approach with a couple of ‘experiential worlds’ on its stand. The first is called the Adventure Scene and essentially just features current models with knobbly tyres and outdoor pursuits accessories, but the second is much more interesting to TG.

Known as the Performance Scene, parked over here is the Performance-E STI concept that you see above. Now, we don’t know all that much about said concept so far, but it’s definitely all-electric and apparently features a “driver-friendly layout and a comfortable, spacious interior”. Sounds like an Impreza to us.

The styling is certainly very sharp and it’s finished in the correct blue/gold livery too. From the side it looks like it has a giant rear spoiler, but the little winglets either side of the rear hatch aren’t actually connected in the middle.

“The aerodynamic design generates downforce without a rear wing, combining practical cruising range with racing performance,” says Subaru’s press release. Right.

Fancy a more traditional wing? Well, say hello to the Performance-B STI concept below. Essentially an STI version of the current sixth-gen Impreza hatch, this looks much closer to production and gets the classic bonnet scoop and widened arch treatment. We’re told there’s a proper boxer engine under the bonnet too, plus you get a manual gearbox, a proper handbrake, all-wheel drive and “a balance of advanced performance and power with practicality”.

Surely Subaru should start selling both of these in the UK immediately, no?
