Is it just us, or is Lexus unsure what to do with its luxury saloon?

The third of three ‘LS’ badged vehicles at the Tokyo Mobility Show is a high-riding four-door

Published: 30 Oct 2025

Perhaps the Leuxs ‘LS’ is about to become its own entire sub-brand of models, like ‘Range Rover’. Or perhaps Lexus doesn’t really know what to do with its most enduring badge, having admitted the car was “fighting a losing battle” against SUVs.

But moments after revealing a new LS concept in the form of a six-wheeled van, and giving it a one-seat tender in the form of the self-driving Micro LS concept… we’ve got a third new Lexus concept car called ‘LS’. Meet the LS Coupe.

Of course, it isn’t actually a coupe. That’s what you’d have expected, and if there’s one thing Lexus has done at the 2025 Tokyo Mobility Show, it’s screw expectations up into a little ball and dropkick them into the bin.

No, the LS Coupe is in fact a high-riding four-door saloon kinda thing. Like a jacked-up Audi A7. Or a lower, longer BMW X6. It’s a niche-buster, envisaged (probably) as an all-electric sporty SUV that’s much more rakish than the existing Lexus RX.

Naturally there’s concept car fluff aplenty here. Lexus says the driver and passenger seats are deliberately a completely different shape and construction because the driver’s seat should make the driver want to, um, drive. And the passenger ought to be encouraged to relax. So, sporty seat for the driver, comfy chair for the passenger. But surely someone’s always going to be annoyed – either the driver having to behave for passengers, or passengers feeling seasick as the driver sends it?

Like the Sport Concept supercar, there’s a yolk steering wheel and wraparound digital displays concentrated on the driver. The seat backs, meanwhile, feature vertical screens for rear-occupant entertainment. Anyone else reminded of those big pillar touchscreens you use to order McDonalds?

Angular lighting courtesy of LED strips is designed to evoke the Lexus ‘spindle’ grille up front and accentuate the car’s width at the back. You climb aboard through Rolls-Royce style coach doors, while the boot is a strange slide-out drawer.

Buried in the raked rear screen is a built-in drone which apparently flies along behind the car capturing videos of your adventures. Where do Lexus owners go on adventures? Are you allowed drones down the lawn bowls club?

Like all of the Lexus concept cars revealed this week the LS Coupe makes no concrete claims about if or when it’s going into production. So there’s only one question that really matters here.

Do you like how it looks?
