The Cupra DarkRebel is an EV shooting-brake concept that you can help design

Cupra pens a stunning two-door sports car concept, but it wants you to refine it. No pressure

Published: 24 Apr 2023

Well, this was rather unexpected. Having just pulled the wraps off the (admittedly rather boring) production version of the Tavascan electric SUV-coupe, Cupra has followed up with a two-door shooting-brake sports car thing. Now that’s more like it.

Although, don’t get too excited just yet, because Cupra says the DarkRebel is “a virtual sports car” that acts as a “show car presented through Metahype, Cupra’s space in the metaverse". Right.

We’re not exactly sure what all of that means, but thankfully Cupra has also said that the DarkRebel will appear as a “physical model” in the near future. Whether that model will turn into a proper production sports car is another matter, but apparently through something called the ‘Hyper Configurator’ the general public will be able to actually influence the final design.

Yep, Cupra is taking the configurator game up a notch, although to take part you’ll need to be a member of something called the ‘Cupra Tribe’. Hmm, we’ll pass, thanks. Although with our design skills Cupra probably won’t be too disappointed.

Anyway, we’re told that there are three different environments in which budding designers can influence the DarkRebel, and each one will limit what you’re able to change. Brace, because they’re called the Exponential square, Exponential cube and Exponential infinite. Yeah, we’re lost too, but essentially it sounds like you’ll be able to change the “colours, materials and finishes” of the DarkRebel.

Hopefully you can influence the powertrain too. Naturally-aspirated V8, anyone?
