This electric Ford Mustang has 900bhp and all the volts

Later this month Ford will unveil an “all-electric, Mustang-inspired SUV”. This, as you can see, isn’t it. Built by Ford and Webasto and displayed at SEMA, the Mustang Lithium is a one-off prototype and test-bed for the two companies’ battery and thermal management technologies.

Under the bonnet is a a Phi-Power dual-core electric motor and dual power inverters, which draw power from an 800-volt Webasto battery system that discharges a mega-watt of electrical energy. Most EVs run on 400-volt systems – the Porsche Taycan is the first production car with an 800-volt setup. Practically, more volts mean more performance, less weight, less heat and faster charging times.

The Lithium makes the equivalent of 900bhp and over 1,000lb ft of torque. Meaning much speed. Kit includes Ford Performance’s Track Handling Pack and strut tower brace, Brembo brakes from the Shelby GT350R, a Torsen diff, 20-inch Forgeline wheels with sticky Michelin tyres and a one-inch suspension drop. Interestingly it has a six-speed manual gearbox.

Inside there’s a custom ten-inch touchscreen that lets you cycle through Valet, Sport, Track and Beast drive modes. Outside you’ve got a bonnet with windows in it, and customer front/side skirts and a diffuser.
