Looks like Tesla is killing off the controversial Cybertruck

US carmaker’s polarising electric pickup will be shelved in favour of robocabs

Sounds like Tesla is planning to kill off its Cybertruck. At least according to its CEO, who posted on X that the company “will be winding down production” of the controversial electric… thing at some point in 2027.

That, he said, was to allow “room for increased Cybercab production”. So, one awkwardly-styled truck that was initially unable to withstand a baseball strike will now make way for self-driving taxis. Yay.

“Cybertruck fleet will be around for a long time,” he added, pointing to the fact it’ll still somehow have a presence long after it’s departed.

While the Cybertruck had a loyal following in some quarters, it was also derided in others, and this latest step marks the end of a tumultuous time for the polarising EV.

It was beset with production delays and faced numerous issues upon its launch, including with the accelerator pedal, a potentially loose stainless steel trim panel, and even the possibility of the wheels literally falling off.

Despite promising between 250,000 to 500,000 Cybertruck sales a year, reports put the number closer to around 70k units over the last three years.

The Cybertruck’s lead engineer Wes Morrill added that the car “was an incredible technology development platform and lives on through Cybercab”. You can read more about that car here.

Oh, right, the whole ‘sounds like’ bit. Tesla’s CEO didn’t actually say it was being killed off, only that production at its Texas base was being wound down. Texas is the only place it is being made, FYI.
