The new 182bhp Toyota Urban Cruiser is going on sale this summer

The electric second coming of a forgotten car gets a healthy standard kit list, plus optional all-wheel drive

Published: 10 Jan 2025

Toyota Urban Cruiser: remember the name? Yep, that weird crossover thing from the late Noughties which never really caught on is back as an electric car, and it'll land in the UK later this summer for a rumoured starting price of over £30k.

It’s closely related to the e-Vitara, and just like the Suzuki, will come with either a 49kWh or 61kWh battery. The former is offered with a 142bhp front-wheel drive e-motor, while the latter can be had with either 172bhp and front-wheel drive or 182bhp and all-wheel drive. Decisions, decisions.

That compact body also gets Toyota’s ‘hammerhead’ design philosophy, so it has slim headlights and a brawny lower section with prominent rear quarters and a wrap-around light bar. Though from certain angles, there’s no escaping the similarities with the e-Vitara.

It’s the same story inside, where the Urban Cruiser gets a pair of 10in screens and a pretty exhaustive safety suite, which includes beeps and bongs for lane departure and pre-collision. You’ll get a 360-degree camera too, plus a JBL audio kit and a fixed sunroof.

So, Toyota’s having another stab at a previously subpar model, throwing it into a busy segment which already includes the likes of the Kia EV3 and the Volvo EX30. Reckon the new kid’s in with a chance?
