The petrol-engined Omoda 5 has arrived in the UK and costs from £25k
And there's an electric version of the Chinese crossover thing too, but that's a bit pricier
Omoda – y’know, that Chinese carmaker new to the UK? – well, it’s now put price tags on its crossover SUV. The petrol-powered 5 and its fully electric E5 sibling are going to cost from £25,235 and £33,055 respectively. That's a smidge more than the £24k Omoda was originally targeting, but it's still low.
In fact, the Omoda 5 is over four grand cheaper than a Nissan Qashqai - one of the very many SUVs the UK-nascent model is competing against in a marketplace already chock-full of choice.
To recap, the 5 has a 1.6-litre turbo four-pot petrol engine producing 183bhp. The front-wheel-drive motor is mated to a seven speed box, claims a 0-62mph time of 7.9 seconds (same as the Qashqai) but tops out at 128mph (where the rival maxes out at 105mph).
In territory not yet entered by the Qashqai, the fully electric E5 version features a 61kWh blade battery with an eight-year warranty and a claimed range of 257 miles. It supports charging up to 80kW, meaning a 10-80 per cent recharge takes about half an hour.
And what else makes the Chery-backed Omoda so different? Something less tangible and marketed as 'lifestyle'. It’s trying to appeal to younger drivers – a not-yet-established evangelical group of social-media-savvy "Omoders" – by offering a plethora of connected tech and driver assist features.
For example, the Noble trim level - the higher of the two available - upgrades some standard features, such as the reversing camera to a 360-degree birds’ eye view one, makes the boot opening electric, offers heated front seats and dual-zone climate control. Opting for the higher spec trim will set you back £27,035 in petrol guise and £34,555 for the electric variant.
When it comes to aftercare, Omoda reckons using the power of tech – and, er, DHL – it'll be able to get parts and repairs sorted 'hassle-free'. It's happy to chirp on about its five-star safety ratings, too. But is it any good to drive?
