Watch: Nio EP9 electric supercar laps the Nürburgring in 7m 05s

Electric hypercar sounds like a golf cart and looks like it’s in fast-forward

Published: 21 Mar 2017

Remember when we told you about the incredible Nio EP9, the record-shattering electric hypercar?

Well, here’s proof of the EP9’s abilities out on the track. And, for perhaps the first time, we’re not going to suggest that you turn up your speakers to drink in the glorious noise.

That’s because, to be entirely honest, there isn’t much noise, and what is there isn’t particularly glorious. But what still remains is performance. Quite a bit, in fact.

By now, you’re probably familiar with every inch of the 12.8-mile Nürburgring, so when we say that the EP9 managed it – while running at 80 per cent thrust and skirting the outside of the Carousel – in seven minutes and five seconds, you’ll understand the significance.

In case you’re in the mood for comparisons, that’s just eight seconds slower than the almighty Porsche 918, despite the fact that it has one less engine than the Porsche.

Want one? We don’t doubt it. Unfortunately, you can’t. Still, the electric future is looking rather bright all of a sudden, isn’t it?
